Maiya Redding

Artist | Choreographer | Educator

Maiya Redding was raised in Chicago, Illinois, and is now a full-time resident of New York City. She graduated from SUNY Purchase College in 2016 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Dance. During the first semester of her junior year, she studied abroad at the Korean National University of Arts (K-Arts) in Seoul, South Korea, an experience that deeply shaped her artistic perspective.

Since moving to New York she choreographed her work "Breaking through the Generational Curse" on Alessandra Corona Performing Works and created dance films entitled "The Evolution of Womb(man)hood" and "Letters to Medusa".

In 2022, she earned her Master of Fine Arts degree in Dance from Hunter College. While pursuing her MFA, she had the opportunity to serve as an Adjunct Lecturer and Ballet Professor for undergraduate students. Since graduating, she has continued to teach at Hunter College, American Youth Dance Theater, and joined the faculty at Hofstra University in 2022 as an Adjunct Professor, teaching modern and jazz—expanding to ballet in Fall 2025.

While at Hofstra, Maiya choreographed "Faith is Calling" (2022) and restaged her work "Rely on Time to…" (2024). In the summer of 2023, she was selected by the University of North Carolina School of the Arts as one of the choreographers for their Choreographic Institute Residency Program, where she originally created "Rely on Time to…".

In Fall 2024, Maiya joined Montclair State University as an Adjunct Lecturer, teaching ballet. That same year, she premiered her work "Bright Lies, Dark Truths" at both Arts on Site and La MaMa Theater. Most recently, in 2025, she created her dance film "Home" for Hunter College’s dance program and also her work "Chicago Luvin" on Joel Hall Dance Center, which will premiere in Chicago at The Harris Theater in August 23, 2025 for the Chicago Black Dance Legacy Project. Maiya also assumed the full-time position of Special Assistant Professor at Hofstra University, starting this Fall.

As both an artist and educator, Maiya remains committed to creating work that explores identity and storytelling through movement and performance.
